Very unusual grouping of clipped death notices from many different newspapers for 5th Cavalry officer J. Scott Payne, sent to the widow by "Henry Romeike, The first established and most complete newspaper cutting bureau in the world." To quote an obit-"Major Payne graduated from West Point in 1866...he served in a number of expeditions against the Indians, including the memorable and disastrous action and siege at Milk Creek, Colo., September and October, 1879, in the Ute campaign. For his bravery in this campaign he was brevetted major."
Comes with original letter sending the notices to Mrs. Payne. There are 13 notices, the letter lists 15, so obviously two are missing. A very unusual grouping for a famous Indian fighter!
