"...At Hamburg several of Carver's Indians left him and hid in our Indian tepees..." Three page letter dated February 12, 1930 from a veteran of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show!
Written to the famous Indian scout, Captain Luther North. This letter has great content! "Dear Lute:
It has been quite awhile since I received your last letter and this is the first letter I've written in the new year. During the rough weather it was about all we could do to keep thawed out between stunts. We got through, though, and our stock does not look any the worse for having gone through it. The stock cows of held their own in mighty good shape. They have had plenty of wild hay and alfalfa to keep them busy, and plenty of stocks to run in. Have shipped out several truckloads of cattle and hogs and still have around 50 head of cattle in the feedlot but there are a few top heifers among them that will be turned back in the stock herd when grass comes. Still have quite a few hogs about ready for market. Have 30 head of Hampshire brood sows for this spring, and with any kind of luck they will bring us plenty of pigs. We don't care for too many, as they take up lots of room after a little while.
That article about Carver was like all the rest of them. Personally, I never cared much for the man. He always appeared to me like a "Me -Me " person, and I do not honestly believe he had the slightest thought of anyone but himself. I will tell you what a reputation his outfit had in Berlin. When our outfit pulled into that city we were not permitted to leave our coaches until officials have inspected all hands. Then we unloaded and after everything was lined up, we had a soldier outfit escort us to our show grounds. There we had to keep inside till officials were satisfied we were all right-and then each individual was given a pass card permitting him to go anywhere in the city. I still have my card as a souvenir. They told us that Carver's gang had given them so much trouble that they were taking no chances with us. At Hamburg several of Carver's Indians left him and hid in our Indian tepees. One morning a man came over from Carver's to look for his Indians. Most of our people were out of camp, and I had just started to leave when Mr. Salsbury called me and told me to come with them to help round up the Indians. They did not want to go back. Said they did not get enough to eat, but Salsbury told them they would have to go back, as we did not need them, and had no room for them. Suppose you noticed in papers where Princess Winona (Lillian Smith) had died down in Oklahoma-and also Mike Russell, an old friend of Cody's died at Deadwood. Grass is going to come early this spring. We are all as usual, and Betty sends love to you and Mrs. North. Hope you are well. George" Letter in fine condition with wear as shown in the scan. I don't know who George is, but it would be worth while looking up all the "George's" who served in Buffalo Bills famous show during the late 1880's and early 1890's. Cody's show visited Berlin Germany in 1890 at the same time the famous Dr. Carver was there with his show. $350.00 plus shipping
