Two page 1863 letter from Major General U. S. Grant to General W. Hammond, Surgeon General, defending the sanitary and medical conditions of his army in front of Vicksburg! Period script "Official" copy signed by General E. R. S. Canby as A.A.A.G. in Washington. In fine condition with only minor fold wear near edges. I apologize for the poor scan, I am working on getting better scans from my new scanner. A few excerpts:

"...a great deal has been said to impress the public generally, and all officials particularly, with the idea that this army was in a suffering condition and mostly from neglect. This is most erroneous. The health of this command will compare favorably with that of any Army in the field, I venture to say, and every preparation is made for the sick that could be desired..."

Much more excellent content. A great look into the inner workings of the Army of the Tennessee under General Grant, and how he was willing to defend it from criticism. Canby was later murdered by the Modoc Indian leader Captain Jack.
